SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 2, 2016) DanceFAR and the Cancer Prevention Institute of California  (CPIC) proudly present the 5th annual performance of DanceFAR (Dance for a Reason), a spectacular evening of world-class dance for the benefit of cancer prevention research and education. Tickets are available now on the DanceFAR website for the performance and after-party to be held Tuesday, November 29th at 7:30 p.m. at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Inspired by the theme “Dance For A Reason,” DanceFAR co-founders James Sofranko, Garen Scribner, and Margaret Karl, current and former dancers with the San Francisco Ballet, bring together acclaimed local and international dancers onstage for one night only. A magnificent after-party featuring bites and drinks from the Bay Area’s finest restaurants and wineries is included in the ticket price.

Ben Needham-Wood, who started dancing at age five, has been contributing his talents to DanceFAR annually ever since he joined Smuin Ballet three years ago. For him, getting in front of cancer is personal. He lost his mother to inflammatory breast cancer in 2013, only a few short months before joining Smuin Ballet. In his words, “I support DanceFAR because cancer prevention is the best way to avoid the struggle and heartbreak of a cancer diagnosis.”

According to DanceFAR cofounder James Sofranko, "Five years of DanceFAR is so special because it highlights the connection between the passion of the dance community and the passion of the good people at CPIC. Working together for the greater good, we can accomplish anything, even eradicating cancer."

On average, one in two people will develop cancer in their lifetimes. Yet, cancer prevention research receives less than seven percent of federal cancer research dollars.
According to CPIC Chief Executive Officer Donna Randall, “We envision a world where cancer is a disease of the past and this is what we work toward every day. CPIC research and education initiatives, more and more, depend on private funding to survive. DanceFAR provides us with some of the funding we need to conduct research into who gets cancer and why and bring our findings into at-risk communities through our educational programs.”

Dance companies already confirmed for this year’s performance include dawsondancesf, Flying Under the Radar, Garrett + Moulton Productions, Julia Adam Dance, ODC/Dance, Robert Moses KIN, and Smuin Ballet. A complete roster of artists will be announced in mid-October.

San Francisco Magazine is the official media sponsor of DanceFAR.

About the Organizers
DanceFAR was founded in 2012 by San Francisco Ballet dancers Garen Scribner, James Sofranko and Margaret Karl as a way to give back to the community and encourage volunteerism, providing a platform for artists to share their talents while contributing to charitable causes. The DanceFAR team is proud to have raised almost $350,000 for CPIC over the last four years.

About the Cancer Prevention Institute of California
The Cancer Prevention Institute of California is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing cancer and to reducing its burden where it cannot yet be prevented. We are the only freestanding research institution working solely to prevent cancer using extensive population data. CPIC researchers study a wide range of cancer risk factors, such as racial/ethnic background, socioeconomic status, age, occupation, gender, genetic predisposition, geographic location, environment and lifestyle to determine how these factors affect frequency, distribution and types of cancers.
