What is the NICE Research study?
The NICE study is a research study to test new ideas about the causes (etiology) of breast cancer, that is, why some women get this disease and others do not. This study is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program, for which the proceeds come from sale of the breast cancer research postage stamps.

Who is taking part in this study?
Participants in this study are from a diverse group of 1000 women with and without breast cancer, ages 50-79, and living in Northern California.

What does participation involve?
Women who choose to participate in this important study will be asked to:

Take part in an hour-long telephone interview about their family and background

Give us a small sample of their saliva

Return the postage-paid mailer to us, including the saliva sample kit and a signed consent form

Why do we need a saliva sample?
In the future, we will test the DNA present in saliva for possible genetic causes of breast cancer.

Will participants be compensated for their time?
In appreciation for their time and effort, participants will receive their choice of a $20 check or a $20 gift card (Target or Wal-Mart).

Are my responses confidential?
All information collected will be used for research only and will be kept strictly confidential. To increase confidentiality, we will assign participants a study number to use on all forms and the saliva samples. Thus, subject names will not be associated with responses or appear in any reports.
