Business professionals and friends of NCCC from Silicon Valley to San Francisco came out to enjoy the stunning atmosphere of the Bonhams & Butterfields auction house in support of cancer prevention at NCCC's 35th Anniversary Celebration. Also in attendance were representatives from NCCC's founding organizations -- Stanford University, UCSF, and the California Division of the American Cancer Society. NCCC was pleased to have guests from fellow cancer-fighting organizations in attendance, as well, such as Komen for the Cure and the Peter Michael Foundation.

Rare art, glimmering chandeliers and antique chests and mirrors framed the rooms, as guests partook in the evening’s activities. CBS 5's Kate Kelly gracefully led guests through a program that included both stories of personal experience with cancer and a bold vision for future research that will enable us to stop the disease before it starts. Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz's keynote address and words from Saul A. Rosenberg Research Award honoree Alice Whittemore, Ph.D., hushed the room. Tireless fundraisers Hilary Newsom Callan and Geoff Callan, recipients of the Doris Fisher Community Leadership Award, were met with a standing ovation for their support of cancer prevention research and education at NCCC.

The event also included a briefing on the groundbreaking ATHENA Breast Health Network research project for interested guests given by NCCC Research Scientist Dr. Christina Clarke. For more information on the ATHENA Breast Health Network project, please click here.

Dr. Sally Glaser's Vision for the Future of NCCC
At the anniversary celebration, NCCC CEO and Research Scientist Sally Glaser, Ph.D., insisted that, with a one-in-two risk of developing cancer sometime in our lives, “we must do more” to stop people from getting cancer in the first place and “we must accomplish much.” Dr. Glaser shared the following vision for NCCC's future and revealed that big changes are on the way.

"With your support, I pledge that:

We will make consistent advances in learning how to stop cancer before it occurs by identifying the causal connections that otherwise go undetected in large populations.

We will set and advance the state and national agenda in understanding who gets cancer and why, and in recommending what to do to prevent it throughout the entire population.

And because cancers do not affect all groups similarly, we will be leaders in reducing or eliminating disparities in cancer occurrence across all racial groups and socio-economic levels through our research, outreach and community education.

With the help of everyone in this room, our organization will be the largest and strongest cancer prevention research group in California."
